Smile

You can see the sign " Smile 0 " at any McDonald's Japan. But the smile is not free in New York City. I've never been greeted with a smile at a fast foods restaurants in NYC. Most employees looked angry for some reason. I saw a full smiles at expensive restaurants in Manhattan. Therefore, a smile costs a lot in NYC.

In my 2nd year in US, I went to Trenton, New Jersey to take FLEX, the medical license examination for foreign medical graduates. Since the exam continued for 3 days, I stayed at the Howard Johnson motel there.
Though Trenton is a state capital, it seemed to me a local town in woods.
I went to the restaurant of the motel in the evening. A young white waitress came to me to take an order. When she spoke to me, she smiled naturally. It was a big surprise to me. I spoke about this episode to one of the residents later. He replied, " Look, Tomoyuki, New York City is not America. Anywhere in US smiles are indispensable in restaurant business."
