The memories of World Trade Center
World Trade Center ( WTC ) disappeared from Manhattan
on September 11, 2001. It was so outrageous, shocking and sad to me. I want
to try to write my memories regarding WTC as its requiem.
For
the last 2 years of the 3 year residency, I was commuting between Manhattan
and Brooklyn. When I drove homeward across Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan
in the early evening after a hard day's work, WTC greeted me tenderly. As
I repeated this ceremony many times, I saw the many different of faces of
the WTC.
One early summer evening just after it had stopped raining couple of hours
before, a part of WTC was covered by the light cloud. The top of it could
be seen above the cloud. I was enchanted with the fantastic scene and even
slowed down and tried to memorize the scene in my mind.
I often dined at the Window on the World, a restaurant on the top floor
of the WTC. I invited many guests there because it was well known restaurant
and the service was refined. It really represented New York City. I invited
American friends from other states and Japanese friends and my family members
from Japan.
It had a New York style which everybody appreciated. I miss it very much.
The view from the WTC was gorgeous, but we could not see WTC itself
from there. The best view of the WTC was, I believe, from River CafeL at
the Brooklyn side of Brooklyn Bridge. I also went there many times with
vsitors to New York. The night view of lower Manhattan including WTC was
one of the best night views in the world.
