Brooklyn Memoir (42) |
|||
Brooklyn Aramis,
my porte-bonheur It was in June 1983, when my residency training in Brooklyn was about to end that my regular patient, an African-American woman, came to my clinic, for her last visit. I had been following her hypertension and diabetes problems for the past 3 years. At first she stated her gratitude for my medical care for the last 3 years. She said “White doctors talk a lot but don’t care how I feel. Dr. Kido talks little but always tries to care for me sincerely.” She then took out a package from her bag and gave it to me. I unwrapped the package and found a set of the Aramis eau de Cologne and after-shave lotion. I had been using the Aramis eau de Cologne since I started living in US. She recognized this by its scent! I was amazed by her sensitivity and also moved that she gave me a relatively expensive present considering her economic status. The Brooklyn Aramis became my porte-bonheur (amulet) since then, and I use it only for important events; when I first met with my wife, when I went to Riyadh as the team leader of the Japanese Medical Team and when I had an interview at American Hospital of Paris.
