Brooklyn Memoir

 Brooklyn Memoir (40)
The vacation in Acapulco (1)

I took 4 week vacation in March 1983, my third year in the U.S., and I went to Acapulco, Mexico. I booked a group tour at a tiny travel agency in Manhattan. Therefore, my travelmates were ordinary people around New York, like a middle-aged opticians from Yonkers and young women respiratory therapists from Brooklyn. I called Seiji, a friend of mine doing a research fellow in Sacramento, California, and asked him to meet in Mexico City.

We met each other in Mexico City successfully. From that time on, Seiji was a member of our tour and stayed in the hotel with me, although I paid for one person in New York. Believe it or not, Mexican people don’t care such a trivial matters at all. Tour conductor and other tour members greeted Seiji cheerfully.

We stayed in Mexico City for 2 days and went to Acapulco. All of the tour members became very friendly by then. Seiji and I went out several times with two young respiratory therapists from Brooklyn, because we were youngest members in the group.

One afternoon we decided to have dinner at the Hotel Princess, which became famous with Elvis Presley's movie "Fun in Acapulco." We didn’t know the reputation of the restaurant there, but we heard the sunset seen from its private beach was beautiful. We arrived at the hotel in the late afternoon and waited the sunset at the bar beside the beach. We went out to the beach just before sunset. The sunset seen from the beach was really fantastic.

We chose French for dinner, because all of us were fed up with tacos and enchiladas by then. The French restaurant at the Princess was unexpectedly nice; they served delicious foods with tasty French
wine. Moreover, the price was very reasonable. I remember it cost only $30-40 per person. Seiji and I paid for girls, of course. I said “Never mind. We Japanese are as macho as Mexican.
I’ve never been treated by girls in my life.”

The girls, being satisfied with the dinner, wanted to treat us back some way. They decided to take us to a disco. Seiji and I had to dance with them until 1 am that night. Two Japanese macho men miserably fatigued to death.
