- Mac Donald at night -

This is an episode about when I was rotating through surgery. Surgical residents often used rough curse words at each other, but otherwise were very well organized and good residents. They worked as a team.

On one particular day, there were so many surgery cases including emergency ones. The residents came out of the operation room around 10 pm. (They were supposed to sign out at 5 pm.) They had been working in the Operating Room (OR) for 10 hours after lunch, and therefore were starving to death. The cafeteria was closed at that time. I was the only 1st year resident that night and so was asked to drive to the nearby MacDonald's to buy something to eat. Since the neighborhood was unsafe especially at night, I was told not to get out of the car by one of the Indian women, the chief resident.
I bought 10 Big Macs and cokes at the drive-through counter. It was a new experience for me since in those days, there were no drive-through counters in Japan.

I was welcomed by the starving surgical residents. One of them shouted, "Congratulations for surviving Brooklyn at night." The team spirit became even stronger from that night.
